The Bartimaeus Trilogy
by Jonathan Stroud
# 1---The Amulet Of Samarkand

Don't listen to anyone who compares this series
to Harry Potter.
The only similarities are that it's set in
England (a very DIFFERENT England!),
& one of the main characters is a 12 year
old fledgling magician apprentice.
Magicians run the Governments of the world
& England has the best.
These magicians only have powers through the
various "Other Place" entities
(demons, imps, djinnis, foliats, etc.) of
varying degrees of strength
that they summon as slaves to this world to
do their bidding.
The REAL star of the show is an ancient, shape-shifting,
wise cracking djinni named Bartimaeus.
Chapters of the story are told in his own
words
with some hilarious footnotes.
Bartimaeus is reluctantly summoned by the young
magician,
Nathaniel, for a simple mission of revenge:
Steal a magical item from another magician
named Lovelace
who physically & emotionally humiliated
him in front of other magicians,
& then to plant it in the study of Nathaniel's
cruel master
who stood by, weakly, and ALLOWED his apprentice
to be humiliated.
The problems begin when he chooses
The Amulet Of Samarkand as the magical item.
People have died because Lovelace wanted this
amulet...
But for what reason ?
What powers does it possess & who is Lovelace
planning to use them on ?
Little does Nathaniel realize the trouble he
is getting himself (& others) into.
Bartimaeus knows the dangers & wants out,
but the young magician has him in his power
with the threat of a spell
of Indefinite Confinement at the bottom of
the Thames River !
What can he do but co-operate and, in so doing,
help Nathaniel save the country & his
own 5,000 year old hide ?
